Miners from the gold mines in northern Greece on Wednesday demonstrated outside the environment ministry, in protest against the suspension of Eldorado Gold’s investments in Greece.
The Canadian gold mining company Eldorado Gold recently announced it would be suspending operations at its investments in Greece, citing a failure of the Greek government to meet its contractual obligations.
Some of the protesters managed to break through police lines and enter the building.
Environment and Energy Minister George Stathakis is later expected to meet with a delegation of the protesting miners, while strong police forces are ranged at the entrance of the ministry to prevent further attempts to break through. The gold miners arrived in Athens in three coaches.
